Specials & The Atelier
Each week at The Advent School, students engage in a rich rotation of experiences — called specials — in physical education, library, Spanish, art, science & engineering, music, and yoga. These specials complement our Reggio-inspired approach, encouraging children to explore, create, and connect with the world around them.
Advent School Specials — and the Specialist faculty who lead them — are an integral part of many beloved traditions. Whether they’re practicing mindfulness, experimenting in science, or expressing themselves through art and music, students build confidence, curiosity, and joy in learning.
Library
Every child at Advent comes to the Library once a week to read and discover new books!
Embracing Boston as an extension of our classroom, students have the opportunity to visit a local bookstore during our annual Book Fair.
Music
Music at The Advent School covers movement, theory, instruments, singing, drama, and storytelling.
Each year, all classes perform songs at both our Winter Concert and Graduation. Each spring, fifth and sixth graders put on a musical.
Spanish
Children begin their Spanish journey at Advent through play, music, story-telling, artistic expression and plenty of fun! Later on, reading and writing practice are added so students can gradually learn the basics of all components of the Language.
P.E.
Our fundamental focus is to create a foundation rich in cooperative play and increase body awareness.
P.E. faculty also look to grow and improve aerobic play, core strength, and a wide variety of locomotor skills.
Yoga and Mindfulness
An inclusive, accessible approach to the social justice practice of Yoga & Mindfulness beyond physical movement. This special is dedicated to creating space for supporting, educating, and empowering each student within the Advent School community.
Uniquely Advent: The Atelier
What is an Atelier?
At Advent, the Atelier is a joyful and inspiring part of our Reggio-inspired approach—a place where children blend science, engineering, art, and Spanish to dive deeply into connected learning. Often described as the “laboratory of ideas,” the Atelier is filled with beautiful materials that invite children to wonder, create, and discover new ways of expressing themselves. Rooted in the Reggio belief in the “one hundred languages of children,” the Atelier honors every child’s unique ways of thinking, exploring, and connecting with others.
Guided by an Atelierista, students investigate thematic curriculum through art, science, Spanish, and more—studying light and shadow, air and the ocean, the chemistry of cooking, and whatever sparks their curiosity. At Advent, the Atelier is always evolving, just like the children who bring it to life.
