School Nurse

The Advent School, located in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts, serves 135 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Through its Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, Advent's faculty deliver authentic, rigorous, and experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to "learn with passion, act with courage, and change the world."

Advent seeks a Registered Nurse to join our community and provide health services to students. The School Nurse would be on campus for up to 16 to 20 hours per week (negotiable), which includes time working at the front desk. The School Nurse oversees the school's health policies, provides guidance and training to staff on the administration of medication, including emergency meds, and ensures the school is in compliance with state regulations. Additionally, there are opportunities for the School Nurse to work with students, periodically providing lessons on health and wellness.

Weekly hours are negotiable. Salary between $25,000 - $35,000 depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the school’s health policies and medication administration

  • Check students records annually, including physical forms and vaccination records

  • Keep thorough health records in the School ‘s database, including documenting the administration of medication

  • Manages all administrative and compliance aspects of the Health Office, including submission of annual health physicals, asthma and allergy action plans, and vaccination records

  • While on campus, administer prescribed and over-the-counter medication in accordance with the state's medication policy and train / oversee staff administering medications when the Nurse is off campus

  • Support teachers and staff in understanding students’ health and medical needs, including the proper storage and administration of emergency medications like Epi-pens and inhalers

  • Provide training to administrators and teachers regarding first-aid and health policies to ensure alignment with the School’s procedures

  • Create and implement age-appropriate health education related to nutrition, growth, and personal care

  • Some time on campus will also be at the school’s front desk and includes answering phone calls and monitoring visitors in and out of the building

Required Skills & Characteristics

  • RN license required, previous School Nurse or pediatric experience preferred

  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification

  • Ability to be discrete and manage confidential information

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
