Life on the Farm: Advent Students at The Farm School
Fifth and Sixth Graders have been busy exploring the science and social systems behind the food we eat—connecting biology, geography, and human stories. What better way to deepen their learning than with a stay at a real farm? Last week, they spent an unforgettable few days at The Farm School, immersing themselves in hands-on learning, teamwork, and the rhythms of farm life.
From the moment they arrived, students were welcomed by friendly farmers who led them on a tour of the barns, fields, and gardens. Excitement filled the air as they met the animals, explored the crops, and got a first glimpse of the hard work—and beauty—that goes into life on the farm.
After lunch and settling into their bunks (beds made neatly, of course!), students had time to explore. Some headed for the swings, others visited the chicken coops or cows, and a few wandered through the fields, taking in every sight and sound. It was a joy to see them explore so confidently and joyfully.
In the afternoon, students were introduced to their work groups and jumped right into farm life. They spread hay over newly planted garlic, chopped wood, cleaned the cow area, and shoveled compost—all while learning new skills and supporting one another. Later, during chore time, they cared for animals, tidied the bunkhouse, or joined the “wild walk” through the woods, spotting fungi and listening for birds.
The next day brought new experiences and deeper learning. Students joined an afternoon class all about seeds and pollination, where they examined a variety of seeds and learned how they travel—by wind, water, or with help from animals and insects. They studied local pollinators and plant life cycles, then created beautiful art pieces illustrating how seeds move and grow. The combination of science, observation, and creativity made the lesson come alive in true Advent style.
Each new day at Farm School brings deeper learning—not only about farming but about patience, teamwork, and awareness. As students discover, life on the farm runs on listening, collaboration, and care. We’ve seen them grow in independence, taking responsibility for their belongings, helping one another, and pitching in to keep shared spaces clean and welcoming. Advent students are naturally curious and full of questions, and they’re learning that sometimes the best discoveries happen by trying first—through observing, listening, and experimenting before asking. It’s a wonderful kind of growth to witness.
Meals have been a highlight, too. From oatmeal and yogurt made right at the farm to fresh salads, burrito bowls, and farm-raised burgers, students have enjoyed wholesome, delicious food—and many have proudly tried something new!
Evenings at the farm were just as special. Students gathered around campfires for stories, reflection, and laughter, sharing favorite moments from the day.
We’re filled with pride for our students. They worked hard, cared deeply, and embraced every challenge with curiosity and joy. The experience has been more than a field trip—it’s been a journey of growth, discovery, and connection to the world around them.
