A Reggio-inspired recess refresh

Exciting things are happening in the recess yard! Inspired by children’s interests and curiosity, new spaces and materials are inviting even more creative, collaborative play.

Our first big change: new gardens—a heartfelt thank-you to Ms. Vega and her dad for helping bring this project to life! Nearby, children can explore a new tiny house station, created in response to their growing fascination with building and imaginative design.

The magnetic wall is another favorite. Kids who love building with Magnatiles in the Atelier can now enjoy a similar experience outdoors, using magnetic tiles and letters. We are excited to see what the kids create!

The garden area and Atelier art installations have become a space for wonder and discovery. Children have started a nature collection and are curating their findings with care.

We also have a new student-led Cleaning Club—kids are already leading the charge by gathering leaves and compost. The compost bin built over the summer is ready and waiting for future use!

Finally, our 3rd graders designed a set of signs outlining rules on our sports court. This was an inspiring idea that we hope to extend across the yard. Visuals for each space help children co-create and take ownership of their environment—hallmarks of our Reggio-inspired approach.
