Welcome to the Atelier

Led by Atelerista Vicky de la Garza P'23'27, the Atelier is not simply a classroom. It's a place where children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and freely express themselves.

What is an Atelier?
An Atelier in a Reggio-inspired school is a special place for deep and connected learning. As the Reggio Children website describes, "Ateliers are environments promoting knowledge and creativity, suggesting questions and generating evocations; they are beauty that produces knowledge and vice-versa, the places where 'the hundred languages' are enacted."

The theory of the hundred languages is the belief that each child has a hundred ways of thinking, expressing themselves, understanding, and being in relationship with others. The Atelier supports the child's hundred languages by providing a space with various materials and opportunities for expression.

Guided by an Atelierista, the Atelier is a place of research, experimentation, creation, and meaningful learning. Students explore concepts of light and shadow, air and ocean, and follow their curiosity with a mix of art, science, and Spanish. Advent's Atelier is a space in flux!

The Atelier’s Collective Definition

“We are currently in the process of creating a collective definition of the Atelier. Encouraged to reflect on their individual experiences within the space, children have been sharing description words that capture the essence of the environment and have written them in these cards.”
