World Water Day 2010

The entire Advent School celebrated UN World Water Day on Monday, March 22, with an exhibit and activities on Boston Common, as part of our year-long study of Water and our commitment to environmental sustainability and social justice.

We are studying water this year as part of Advent’s commitment to environmental sustainability. We just turn our water on and we have as much as we want. And if we weren’t studying this we wouldn’t know that there isn’t enough water in some parts of the world. It’s our responsibility to be aware of how people in different parts of the world live and to do something about it. An Advent 4th Grader

We set up an exhibit on the Common near the Park Street T with posters and information about the state of water around the world. Advent students in grades 4, 5 and 6 led variety of educational activities designed to share what they have learned about the critical issues affecting water around the world.

Water Relay – 6 Liters for 6 Kilometers: In many parts of the world women and children walk long distances to get water everyday. Students carried 6 liters of water for 6 kilometers on the Common.

What did the Advent kids think about the World Water Day experience? Compiled by Camille Sanborn, Grade 5

ECC: The bag felt pretty heavy.

First Grade: It felt really, really heavy. My arms hurt.

Second Grade: It was heavy like an elephant was sitting on my back. It was fun and heavy and it was hard to go down hill.

Third Grade: Thumbs up. Double heavy. My morning is started.

Fourth Grade: It wasn’t east but we found that women and children walked even farther. Then, it was easier.

Did you know?

The Earth’s surface is 80% water. Less than 1% can be used as drinking water.

Americans use an average of 75-80 gallons of water a day.

In developing countries a person uses an average of 2.65 gallons a day.

A leaky faucet wastes 5 gallons a day or 2,082 gallons a year.

Most of the world’s people – mainly women and children – walk at least 3 hours a day to fetch water.

Approximately 1.5 million gallons of oil are used to make plastic water bottles – enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year. Carry your own refillable water bottle.

“We continue to be grateful for the wonderful educational, social and moral foundation our sons received at the Advent School.”
