James ‘ 08 and Jack ‘ 09 Ditomassi will travel to Japan this summer as part of the Red Sox US – Japan Youth Baseball Exchange. The program’s mission is to promote greater cultural understanding between Japan and the United States by allowing participants to visit each others’ countries and learn lessons of life and culture through their shared love of baseball.
James just completed the seventh grade at Boston College High School. Jack, who will graduate from Advent this June, will follow his brother to BC High in the fall. “I can’t wait to go on this trip and I think about it every day,” says James. “The biggest thing I’m looking forward to is meeting new people and just playing baseball with some of the kids there, and getting to know their culture.”
James and Jack were two of only twelve youths selected for the program through a rigorous application process which included submitting a portfolio with essays and baseball coach and teacher recommendations; an interview with panel comprised of the Red Sox Foundation’s Executive Director and three foundation staff members; and a baseball skills assessment by Northeastern University’s baseball coaches.
“I felt awesome when I got chosen because baseball is my favorite thing to do in leisure time, and I think playing in Japan would a wonderful experience,” says James. “Needless to say I was thrilled when I got the phone call that I was selected to be on the 12-member team heading to Japan in July. The application process was pretty long and also stressful, but it was all worth it.”
