Math

The Advent School Math curriculum is rooted in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Standards. Using a variety of Math manipulatives and published programs including Investigations in Number, Data, and Space (known as TERC,) teachers challenge their students with problems that have multiple solutions.

Our curriculum is conceptually based, and children learn to recognize the importance of patterns as they approach their work. Each unit of study invites students to examine mathematical ideas while deepening their understanding of computation, geometry, graphing, fractions, percents, measurement and more.

In tandem with our conceptual approach to teaching Math, children learn their addition and multiplication facts and understand the connection between mathematical operations. Children are expected to explain their thinking, often recording their ideas in a Math notebook in the upper grades.

“What is absolutely unique [about the Advent School] is the judgment, creativity, and developmental attention with which its rich multi-cultural program has been constructed. If any school will underscore and illuminate the opportunity and challenge with which multi-cultural education can be considered, this fine, small, humane scholarly little school can do it for us all.”
