Literacy

At The Advent School, reading groups and literature circles begin at the earliest grade levels. Children discuss literature, moving from factual conversations to inferential and analytical levels. They make story webs and compare and contrast pieces of literature. Using the Writing Process, we teach children to record their ideas on paper, conference with teachers and peers, edit their work, and create a final draft.

Our Middle Grade students write persuasive essays, research topics connected with thematic studies, and learn to further refine and organize their ideas.

We take pride in the fact that we are a school of readers and writers, with literacy and our school Library central to all learning experiences. Like all subject areas at The Advent School, Reading and Writing are integrated into many of our children’s learning experiences. Students expect to read for information related to their class themes, and write about Literature, Math, Science, and Thematic Studies.

“What is absolutely unique [about the Advent School] is the judgment, creativity, and developmental attention with which its rich multi-cultural program has been constructed. If any school will underscore and illuminate the opportunity and challenge with which multi-cultural education can be considered, this fine, small, humane scholarly little school can do it for us all.”
