Art and Music

The Arts are an integral part of all learning at The Advent School. Children meet in half groups once a week for Art class, learning to envision, and create compositions and three-dimensional forms. Developing drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking techniques are examples of individual and collaborative learning. Children often express their understanding of thematic content through the arts and value the process of making art as well as the end result.

In Music classes Advent students enjoy singing, movement, and playing musical instruments. As they learn to read musical notation and create original rhythms, they become good listeners and appreciate a variety of musical forms. Chorus begins in the spring of the Fourth Grade year. Children in Fifth and Sixth Grades participate in chorus and our annual Sixth Grade musical production.

“What is absolutely unique [about the Advent School] is the judgment, creativity, and developmental attention with which its rich multi-cultural program has been constructed. If any school will underscore and illuminate the opportunity and challenge with which multi-cultural education can be considered, this fine, small, humane scholarly little school can do it for us all.”
