Advent Recognized by Senator Kerry's Office!
On Monday, December 12th, all Advent School students and faculty members received an Advent water bottle to help reduce our use of paper and plastic cups. It was estimated by our Sixth Grade class that using the water bottles would save approximately 6,000 cups per month! The water bottles, donated to the school by Jack and Cassie Gurnon (Charles Street Supply), were distributed to all of the children on the front steps of Advent at which time Head of School, Nancy Harris Frohlich, discussed how this initiative, along with using cloth napkins and recycling, is making a huge difference. On hand were Katie Blaz and Tyke Crowley, both policy advisors for Senator John Kerry. Ms. Blaz and Mr. Crowley presented Advent with a congratulatory letter from Senator Kerry (see below for the text of the letter). It was an exciting event for the school and we are thrilled to have received recognition for doing our part to sustain the environment!
New Science Room
This year Advent has a new Science classroom, providing students with the space to explore physical, earth, and natural sciences. Teachers, Susan Coolidge and Tooey Rogers, have written an extensive new curriculum dovetailing with the Massachusetts Science Frameworks. Teaching children with a hands-on approach, they will train students to observe, hypothesize, and verify their ideas. Frequent visits to the local Museum of Science will continue to be central to an Advent student’s learning.
U.N. Decade of Education for Sustainability
Social justice has been a long time staple of our curriculum at Advent. The year 2005 kicks off an important ten years in the educational community. The Advent School is actively participating in the United Nation’s Decade of Education for Sustainability. Committed to teaching children to contribute to a just world, Advent teachers will interweave ecology with issues of equity and justice into their program development.
New Teachers and Staff
Advent prides itself in the excellence of our teaching staff. This year teachers join us from Boulder Journey School, renowned for its Reggio Emilia-inspired program, B.B.N./Lesley University Masters Degree program, Steppingstone Foundation, and Washington D.C. They participated in a day-long new faculty orientation, which includes training in thematic teaching.
