Art & Music

Arts exploration is an integral part of our academic program.  Working as individuals and with their peers, children deepen their sense of community while building their skills, understanding, and self-confidence.  Many Art and Music projects grow out of thematic curricula, while teachers simultaneously provide direct skill instruction.

Children meet in half groups once a week for Art class.  Some of their artwork builds from a study of artists or mediums, involving both two and three-dimensional forms.  Advent children observe, invent, and create concrete and abstract symbols related to class studies. Collaboration is central to many of our student’s experiences, from set design to mural making.  In Art, we teach students to reflect on their work with the goal of creating an enriching, positive experience that emphasizes process as well as product.

In Music class, which meets twice a week, children learn to sing, play instruments in small groups, and read musical notation.  Studying jazz, show tunes, classical, and operatic music, Advent students learn to value many musical forms and be good listeners.  Chorus begins in Fourth Grade, and children in Fourth through Sixth Grades are part of a Sixth Grade musical production performed in the Spring.  Our students love to sing and are comfortable performing in Weekly Sharing and two annual school concerts.
