Assessment
Assessment, both formal and informal, is ingrained into the curriculum at The Advent School. Documenting children’s learning to make it visible to parents, students and teachers is the key element of learning at Advent. Documentation can take the form of writing samples, math and spelling quizzes, reading inventories and photographs. We believe that teaching students the importance of using thinking skills and reaching high standards is critical to an Advent School education. Teachers design rubrics to assess all aspects of student learning. We teach children to reflect on and assess their own work, while striving for excellence. Our goal is to both challenge and validate students at every step along this journey.
Formal assessments at Advent include administration of the ERB standardized test each February for Grades Three, Four and Five. Our goals for conducting this assessment are to look at each student in the context of a normed assessment, to research patterns in student performance and to evaluate our educational program.
Faculty meets with parents at least twice a year during two regularly scheduled conferences. In addition, teachers write detailed reports twice a year describing the social, emotional and the cognitive development of every student in all academic areas.
